Classes 138 to 149: Needlecraft

The General Rules of the Sutton Agricultural Society shall apply.

Additional Rules:

  • Sample fabrics and/or yarns MUST accompany each entry, with the exception of the Prayer/Comfort shawl category. Please place samples in small zip lock bag safety pinned to bottom right hand corner of entry. Thank you.
  • Be sure to read all the rules pertaining to the Needlecraft Section before bringing articles to the Fair for competition.
  • In order to keep a high standard, soiled, defective, more than 2 yrs old, or worn entries will be eliminated from the competition by the Judge and/or the Committee.
  • Quilters please add a 3” sleeve so quilt can be safely hung.
  • Please review OAAS eligibility rules and regulation included in this section.
  • All exhibitors welcome.
  • It is the exhibitors responsibility to ensure entry is in the correct class and item (1 entry per item #). Entries will not be moved once the exhibitor has left the item.

Class 138: Quilting

Rules for OAAS Quilt Competition

General conditions for both hand and machine quilting:

  • Each local fair is entitled to send the grand champion quilt judged “Best in Show” for both sections to the district competition. If the same quilt wins at more than one fair the exhibitor must consider the agricultural society closest to his/her home address as the one from which the quilt will be sent from.
  • Judging will occur at local fairs and district levels. A provincial grand champion will be selected at the annual OAAS convention.
  • The winners name and pattern is to be displayed at the fair on a sign provided by OAAS.
  • Upon making an entry into the OAAS quilt competition the exhibitor agrees to participate in any promotional activities related to the competition.
  • The winning OAAS champion quilt will not be eligible to compete in any future district and or convention OAAS competitions.

Hand Quilting (OAAS Sections 1 to 4)

All articles must be new and unused. Sample fabrics must be attached.

Additional rules for OAAS Hand Quilting Competition:

  • Entries must be solely made and hand quilted by the exhibitor.
  • Entry quilts must be a minimum of 324” measured on the perimeter (smaller quilts will not be accepted)

Prize Money:

1st: $50.00; 2nd: $30.00; 3rd: $20.00

Section:

OAAS Hand Quilting

  1. Quilt – traditional design only – pieced
  2. Quilt – traditional design only – appliqueed
  3. Quilt – mixed technique – must include at least 3 different techniques
  4. Quilt – whole cloth – one fabric on each side of quilt – design made only by hand quilting done on the quilt

Machine Quilting (OAAS Sections 5 to 8)

Sample fabric & floss if embroidery used must be attached to each entry..

Additional rules for OAAS Machine Quilting Competition:

  • Entries must be solely made and hand quilted by the exhibitor.
  • Entry quilts must be a minimum of 324” measured on the perimeter (smaller quilts will not be eligible to proceed to the next level of competition.
  • Entries must have visible quilting

1st: $20.00; 2nd: $15.00; 3rd: $10.00

Section:

OAAS Machine Quilting

  1. Quilt – pieced (must be a min. of 324” measured on the perimeter)
  2. Quilt – crib (not larger than 200” perimeter)
  3. Quilt – appliqueed (must be a min. of 324” measured on the perimeter)
  4. Quilt – not listed above

Machine Quilting

  1. Any style made by first time quilter (1st time quilters must have less than 2 years experience)
  2. Patchwork
  3. Appliqueed
  4. Single quilt – (greater than 240” less than 324” measured on the perimeter)
  5. Quilted wall hanging – (w/sleeve greater than 160” less than 288” measured on the perimeter)
  6. Piece of quilted clothing
  7. Lap quilt – 40” x 60”
  8. Quilt top only – (must be a min. of 324” measured on the perimeter)
  9. 2 quilt sample blocks – 12 1/2” square not quilted
  10. Childs preprinted panel
  11. Youth quilt – (greater than 240” less than 324”)
  12. Rag quilt
  13. Quilt as you go – (method by which sandwiched quilt blocks are pre-sewn then sewn together to form a quilt)

Class 139: Crocheted Work

Prize Money:

Classes 145 to 149: Charitable

All entries to be donated to places indicated, or an acceptable alternate. Due to the nature of these classes, more than one entry is allowed in class 145, 146,147, 148, and 149 however only one item per class is eligible for judging and prize money. Please indicate the item to be judged on the entry tag. Many thanks.

Class 145: Prayer/Comfort Shawl

The prayer shawl knitting/crocheting group meets at Knox United Church in Sutton on the first Monday of every month from October to June. Shawls, baby blankets and lap afghans are created by individuals and given to anyone who is facing a difficult time in their life such as grief, loneliness or health challenges. They are also presented for happy occasions such as weddings, baptisms and graduations.

  • Please note Prayer shawls DO NOT require a fabric sample.,

Class 147: Littlest Angel

Class 148: Project Linus Blankets

“Project Linus” is a nationwide 100% volunteer organization whose goal is to provide handmade blankets to children facing substantial distress or trauma in their lives.

Prize Money:

1st: $10.00; 2nd: $7.00; 3rd: $5.00

Additional Rules:

  • Any pattern is acceptable with any child appropriate colour.
  • Blankets must be washable. No wool, please.
  • Please ensure that you attach your name and address to each blanket to be thanked.
  • Sizes are approximate.
  • The ‘square’ shape is preferred for preemie, newborn and infant blankets as it’s easier to wrap and cuddle a baby in a square.

Section – Knitted or Crocheted Blanket:

  1. Preemie & Newborn (4 lb +): 15” square up to 20”
  2. Newborn (0 – 6 months): 20” square to 24” square
  3. Infant (6 months – 1 year): 24” square up to 35” square
  4. Toddler (age 2 – 4): 35” x 45” or approximate (i.e.: 40×50)
  5. Child (age 5 – 9): 40”x50” or approximate
  6. Tween (age 10 – 13): 40” x 60” or approximate
  7. Teen (age 14 – 17): 40” x 65” – 70” + or approximate

Class 149: Lap Afgans

Knitted or crocheted afghans will be donated to Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Prize Money:

1st: $10.00; 2nd: $7.00; 3rd: $5.00
